Abstract
668,349. Making heat-exchangers. AIR PREHEATER CORPORATION. Nov. 22, 1949 [Dec. 15, 1948], No. 29920/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XIII] Welding.-In a method of making heatexchanger apparatus, fin elements 16 formed with flanges 18 are mounted between a pair of parallel wall plates 10 so that the plates engage the flanges, and a block of heat-conducting material 31 is inserted between the flanges which are then welded to the plates. The block 31, which is of copper and recessed at.32 to accommodate the flanges 18, is placed between the flanges while they are being welded to the plates by rotary welding electrodes 30. Channel fins 19 arranged in line with the fin elements 16 may simultaneously be welded to the opposite faces of the plates to provide extended surfaces in the adjacent . heatchanger passages. In another embodiment pin fins 41 formed by U-shaped wire loops, Fig. 6, may be bonded to the walls 10 by welding or brazing angle-shaped members 42 first to the top and bottom yokes 44 of the wire loops to form flanges and then to the plates as previously described. The fin element 16 may be punched with a row of closely spaced H- shaped slits, the top and bottom portions between the vertical slits being bent normal to the fin surface to form projecting tabs 22. These tabs may be staggered in adjacent fin elements. Specification 668,270, [Group XIII], is referred to.
