Class 18 In tubular cartons having at least one end closing flap comprising two hinged portions, one of which folds in against the side to which it is attached and the other extends across the open end of the container, a tubular tie member is included to prevent outward movement of opposite sides of the carton. In one embodiment, the carton has two end closing flaps at each end, portions 28, 31 of the flaps closing the mouth of the carton and being held in position by tongue-and-slot connections 29, 32. The tie member may comprise two blanks 71 joined by distance pieces 81, which assembly is inserted between the opposite sides 20, 21 of the carton, tongues 72 being bent at right-angles to main portions 75 of the blanks and passed through slots 88, 89 to the outside of the carton. The tongues 75 are bent around the end edges of the carton and tucked into the space between the distance pieces 81, parts 73 of the blanks having previously been folded up between the sides 20, 21. The end closing flaps may be omitted at one end of the carton. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the tie member may comprise a tongue, extending from an end closing flap, which is passed through a slot in the side opposite to that carrying this flap, bent round the end edges of the carton and passed back into the carton through a slot in the side to which it is attached. According to the Provisional Specification tie members such as are shown in Figs. 10, 11 may be used to join two plain sheets together to form a carton and, in the alternative embodiment above, the tongues may have barbs holding their ends between the carton walls.
