666,454. Calculating-apparatus. STUTCHBURY, C. P. Oct. 23, 1950 [Oct. 25, 1949], No. 27413/49. Class 106 (i). [Also in Groups XX and XXV] An instrument which can be used for calculating the powers, e.g. 7th or <SP>5</SP>/ 9 th of numbers and which can be read directly from a scale comprises two arms 1, 2 pivotally connected together by a hinge (see Group XXV), a plurality of pointers 3 each having one end pivotally secured to the arm 1 and the other end movable along a slot 5 extending longitudinally of the other arm 2, the pointers and slot being so disposed and dimensioned that the pointers 3 lie mutually parallel whatever the relative position of the arms 1, 2, and a logarithmic scale 20 carried by the arm 2 with its unity position in register with the pivot between the arms 1, 2. The desired power is read from the position on the scale of the appropriate pointer 3. The instrument may be used for the division of straight lines into numbers of equal parts or into parts of selected length ratios when it is provided with a linear scale 11 along the arm 2 (see Group XX). The scales may be detachable from the arm 2. Specification 628,490 is referred to.
