Abstract
666,046. Universal joints. AMBERG, W. E. Sept. 2, 1949, No. 22779/49. Class 80 (ii). A constant-velocity-ratio joint, permitting relative angular and lateral movement between coupled rotary shaft-members 10, 11, comprises three or more diagonal arms 1, 2, 3, which are relatively rotatable about a common axial centre O, as by ball-bearing connected hubs 25, 26, 27 respectively, each arm engaging pivotally or universally at one outer end (e.g. a') with one shaft-member 10 only, and at the other outer end (e.g. b<SP>1</SP>) with the other shaft-member 11 only. As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, these endconnections are convex rollers 31 radially slidable on the trunnioned arms 1, 3 and engaging cylindrical axial grooves.17 in the shaft-members. In a simplified form, Fig. 8, not shown, the arms are formed of three pressed members pivoted together on a central rivet and having curve-sided end-portions bent over axially to engage radial grooves in the shaft-members.
