665,569. Thermal switches. LUCAS, Ltd., J. July 20, 1950. [Sept. 28, 1949] No. 24836/49. Class 38 (v). [Also in Group XIII] A thermally operated switch for interrupting a circuit in the event of excessive current flowing in the circuit, comprises a bimetallic element c having a pair of slots f, a straining piece h to bow or strain the part g between the slots, a support b for one end of the element and a contact d at the free end of the element co-operating with a fixed contact e. The piece h is a metal strip which at its ends i is bent to form a pair of abutments engaging the central part g of the element and at its sides has a pair of lugs j which engage the underside of the part g. Thus the straining piece h bows the central part g and so stresses the bimetallic element c that when the current flowing in the element reaches a predetermined amount, the element moves with a snap-action to open the contacts d, e. A second fixed contact may be provided so that the switch may function as a changeover switch. Instead of the lugs j a screw may be associated with the straining piece h to bow the central part g.
