Classes 29 and 64(iii) Apparatus for cooling liquids such as water comprises a tank A having an inlet 6 and an outlet 11 and containing substantially vertical refrigerating plates B each containing a eutectic solution cooled by an evaporator coil, the plates B being so arranged in contact with the tank sides and bottom as to define a tortuous path for the liquid from the inlet to the outlet. Ice 50 accumulates on the plates to act as a cold hold-over, a thermal element 51 con.rolling the refrigerating effect. The inlet 6 feeds into a transverse distributer 7 to introduce the liquid to be cooled over the breadth of the tank. A transverse manifold 9 feeds into the outlet 11. The evaporators in the plates B may be connected in series or in parallel and the plates may be evacuated so that the opposing walls are urged towards each other.
