[Also in Groups XI and XIII] A thermally actuated switch for stopping the supply of air and fuel to the burner of a water heater (see Group XIII) if the flame is extinguished is provided with a spiral bimetallic strip 100 attached at one end to a shaft 94. A cam 122 mounted on but not fixed to the shaft 94 engages a spring strip 117 anchored at one end and carrying an electric contact 118 at the other. Rotational movement of the cam, caused by frictional contact between it and a collar 126 pinned to the shaft under the action of a spring-pressed ring 128, is limited by engagement of a pin 123 in a recess in the cam, so that operation of the switch to stop the fuel and air supply is made dependent on a sudden fall in the temperature to which the bimetallic strip 100 is exposed. Hot gases are drawn into the tube 87 enclosing the strip 100 and shaft 94. The tube 87 is connected by tubes 85, 90 respectively to the combustion chamber of the heater and to the intake of the air blower, so that hot gases, mixed with air entering through apertures 92, are drawn into the tube. A semi-cylindrical damper 98 carried by the shaft 94 controls the entry of hot gases.
