Abstract

1335214 Gas fired convector heater RICHARD BAXENDALE & SONS Ltd 21 Dec 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 45306/70 Headings F4W and F4S In a gas fired convector heater having a fan 20 feeding air over a heat exchanger 14 above a burner 15, a second fan 22 within the casing collects the combustion products and cool air to feed diluted combustion gases to a flue 22A. The heat exchanger is shaped to provide greater surface contact and has a baffle to reduce the speed of flow of the combustion gases. The burner 15 is supplied with gas through a manual on-off switch, a room thermostat and a solenoid operated high-low valve. An overheat thermostat is mounted within the casing. A spark igniter is connected with a flame sensor and a control box to cut off the electricity supply if the gas fails to ignite when the on-off switch is pressed. The normally closed overheat thermostat is mounted near the gap between the heat exchanger outlet and the inlet to fan 22, but out of the normal flow path of the hot gases. Cooling air normally flows past it, but if the fan fails or the flue is blocked, hot gases reach the thermostat and cut off the gas flow. This thermostat resets automatically, but the flame failure controls cause a manual reset switch to trip, so that the heater remains off. A thermostat mounted at the top of the gap between the heat exchanger and the fan inlet, operates to by-pass the on-off switch when the flue gases reach a certain temperature, so that the fan 22 starts immediately on ignition, but continues to run after the heater has been switched off. On a low output setting, both fans run at a slower speed then on the high setting. A low pressure cut off valve in the gas supply prevents more than a very small amount of gas reaching the burner in the event of failure in which the gas valve is held open. The heater is started on low rating, and automatically switches to high rating if this has been selected.
