Abstract

1,020,458. Igniting vapour burners. KEMP MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Jan. 14, 1963 [Nov. 12, 1962], No. 42576/62. Headings F4F and F4T. A vapour burner is supplied with oil in an on/off manner by a solenoid valve (not shown) controlled by a thermostat 70 responsive to the temperature of a house heated by the burner and at starting the oil is vaporized by an electrical heater 30 and is ignited by a spark gap between a fixed electrode 28 and a pivoted electrode 22. The burner is also controlled to operate at a high flame rate or at a low flame rate by a room thermostat 58 adapted to energize an electromagnet 46 having an armature 44 acting on the stem 42 of a metering valve 40 in series with the solenoid on/off valve. When the electromagnet 46 is de-energized a spring 50 swings the armature 40 to depress the valve stem 52 to the low flow position and to actuate a switch 52 to operate a fan motor 48 at low speed. If the temperature rises excessively even with the burner operating at the low rate the thermostat 70 de-energizes the solenoid on/off valve so that the burner is extinguished. When the thermostat 70 again closes power is supplied via closed contacts 80, 82 of a bimetal 120 in the vaporizer of the burner to the heater of a bimetallic element 54 which then moves to the dotted line position. In so doing it operates a microswitch 86 to transfer the power from the electromagnet 46 to a coil 100 which moves an armature 102 linked to the pivoted spark electrode 22 to move the latter into the burner combustion chamber; the armature 102 also closes a switch 110 to energize an ignition transformer 29 and the heater 30 for vaporizing the oil. The bimetal strip also moves the armature 44 of the electromagnet 46 to a position that sets the metering valve 40 between high fire and low fire rates and actuates the fan motor switch 52 to the high-speed position; but the fan motor does not operate since it is de-energized by contacts 122, 82 of the bimetal 120 in the vaporizer. When the oil is ignited the bimetal 120 opens the contacts 80, 82 to de-energize the heater of the bimetal element 54 and closes contacts 82, 122 to start the fan motor 48. The burner, Fig. 3 (not shown) comprises a combustion chamber to the base of which oil is supplied by a duct and to which air is supplied through a perforated plate forming the roof of the combustion chamber. The mouth of the combustion chamber leads to a chimney. The movable electrode is movable in and out of the mouth of the combustion chamber. The heater 30 for vaporizing the oil is mounted under the base of the combustion chamber.
