Abstract

659,662. Electromagnetic relays. AUTOMATIC TOTALISATORS, Ltd. June 23. 1949, No. 16731. Convention date, July 23. 1948. [Class 38(y)] In a polarized relay, the flux from a unidirectional permanent or electromagnet 6 passes through a yoke 10 and thence in parallel through the two legs 11, 12 of a horse-shoe electromagnet to an armature 13 arranged centrally above the legs and supported on a blade spring 22. The spring 22 also carries a contact 26 which lies between contacts 27, 28 on two similar blade springs 29, 30. Energization of the coils 20, 21 on the legs 11, 12 strengthens the flux in one leg and weakens it in the other so that the armature is attracted to 11 or 12 according to the direction of current and closes corresponding contacts. The movement causes the unidirectional flux to be increasingly concentrated in the leg towards which the armature moves causing a rapid and certain movement. The magnet 6 may be a permanent magnet in the form of a sleeve or a coil of the same dimensions which may be energized by continuous or intermittent current.
