Abstract

659,400. Tool sliders for grinding- machines. JONES & SHIPMAN, Ltd., A. A., and HOULDSWORTH, J. Jan. 4, 1949, No. 180. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A grinding or other machine tool comprises a tool head carried by a feed slide 1 mounted for movement in a fixed vertical column 8, the feed slide having vertical guide bars 10 with cylindrical working surfaces entering corresponding grooves in rollers 12 which are freely mounted in the column. In the preferred embodiment, there are four guide bars with four corresponding rollers, each guide bar being secured in an accurately ground groove in the feed slide by bolts. Each roller is circumferentially grooved and is mounted on a roller bearing 16 and a ball bearing 17 which prevents axial movement of the roller on its spindle. A plate 18 bolted to the roller allows the play in the ball bearing to be adjusted while a collar 20 interposed between the roller and a plate 21 locates the roller axially. The rollers on one side of the column have eccentric spindles in order that they may be bodily adjusted towards or away from the rollers on the other side of the column. The feed slide carries an electric motor 3 connected by a belt with the grinding wheel spindle 2.
