Abstract

658,879. Wrenches. HALLIDAY, W. M. Feb. 24, 1949, No. 5027. [Class 61(iii)] [Also in Group XXII] In a ratchet winch, carpenter's brace or screwing stock a detachable, rotatable socket member 14 is held in a housing 13 by complementary wedge and groove means associated with the socket member and the end of the pivoted handle 11 in conjunction with yieldable spring means which normally limit the rocking movement of the handle. The slightly cam-shaped end 11a of the handle of a socket wrench bevelled on both sides to form a wedge, engages in a correspondingly tapered groove in the periphery of the rotary member 14. A T- shaped leaf-spring 15 attached to the handle at 16 abuts on the edge of the split lug 13b of the housing. To remove the socket member the handle is turned counter-clockwise and disengaged from the socket member, continued relative rotation of the handle and socket causing the spring 15 to yield. In a modification a stop is provided on the lug 13b to limit the torque applied to the rotary member. In other modifications the wedge and groove means comprise a rib on the rotary member and a groove in the end of the handle, or both members are provided with a groove and a ball is located therebetween. In a further modification the base of the groove in the rotary member is polygonal.
