Abstract
657,404. Centrifugal pumps. WORTHINGTON-SIMPSON, Ltd., CHERRIE, C. M, and SOUTHERN, J. Feb. 25. 1949, No. 5186. [Class 110(i)] A liquid-ring pump has a vaned impeller 4 rotating in a vortex chamber formed with lateral chambers 6, 7 and a peripheral chamber 8, except in the region 9 between inlet 13 and outlet 19. At that region the chambers 6, 7, 8 are eliminated so that liquid is forced radially inwards. Outlet ports 15, 16 are positioned near the impeller hub and are separated from the chambers 6, 7, by wall portions 17. Suction and delivery branches 12, 18 are arranged in the form of a U so that liquid is retained therein when the pump has stopped. The walls 17 seal the outlet passage from the suction during the' priming operation. A bush 21, of bronze or other corrosion-resisting metal, is held in place by a cap nut 22 and a washer 23, and supports the impeller 4 which is free axially on a key 24. A seal 25, 28 and a rubbing member 26 may be similar to that described in Specification 632,957. A flange 29 may be used to secure the pump to the casing of a driving motor. The impeller shaft is overhung, having no bearing within the casing.
