Abstract

657,207. Drying-apparatus. SAUNDERS, P. G. Feb. 1, 1949, No. 2781. [Class 34(ii)] Apparatus for drying green crops &c. comprises an externally heated chamber through which the material passes, a number of jets being arranged throughout the length of the chamber to introduce air to agitate and progress the material and carry off the moisture released. As shown, a chamber 1 is fed from a hopper 2 by a screw conveyer 3 the bottom of the chamber being a tray 44 which also constitutes the upper wall of a flue 5 through which pass hot gases from a burner 6. The lower wall of the flue 5, formed of steel plates 7 is cooled by air from an intake 8. Some of the air heated by its passage through a chamber 9 beneath the plate 7 passes through an opening 10, out through a duct 11 and into the drying chamber 1 through a port 12 to provide drying air. Other air from chamber 9 enters flue 5 through a controllable inlet 13 to support combustion. The hot combustion gases from the flue 5 pass into a chamber 14, thence through outlet 15, duct 16 and port 17 into a chimney 18. Within the chamber 1 are a series of nozzles 19 which are supplied with heated air by means of a blower 20 which draws air from chamber 9 through a duct 21 and delivers it into a coil 22 situated in the chamber 14 and connected by ducts 23, 24 with an air distributing device 25 from which a separate duct 26 passes to each nozzle 19. The valve 25 is operated by a rod 30 and mechanism 31 and supplies each nozzle in turn with a blast of hot air under pressure. These blasts of air agitate and convey the material through the chamber and remove the water vapour driven off by the heat.
