Convention date, Oct. 29, 1948 [Class 55(ii)] An oil gas which can be used as a town's gas is produced by vaporizing oil and water, mixing the oil vapour and steam thus formed and preheating to 400-450‹C, the mixture then being passed to an oil gas generator of known type wherein a sufficient amount of air is admitted to produce enough heat by partial combustion to crack the remaining oil vapour to permanent gas. In one form, the apparatus consists of a conventional generator 1 which receives a mixture of heated oil vapour and steam from a vaporizer 2. The latter comprises a jacket 3 heated by a burner 11 and containing a water heating coil 4 and vaporizer 5, feed at constant prssure from a pipe 6 and an oil heating coil 7 and vaporizer 8 fed from a vessel 9. The coils 5 and 8 are connected to a superheater coil 10 wherein the mixed oil vapour and steam are heated to 400-450‹C. The heated mixture then passes to the generator 1, just enough air also being admitted, through a pipe 13 to produce, by partial combustion, sufficient heat to fix the remaining oil vapour as a permanent gas. The superheated steam reacts with the oil vapour and cracking products to form CO and H2, the final gas leaving by an outlet 14 being suitable for direct distribution as town's gas.
