Abstract

637,108. Gas manufacture. GAS LIGHT & COKE CO., PEXTON, S., and MACCORMAC, M. April 16, 1947, No. 10146. [Class 51 (ii)] In a process for producing combustible gas from a hydrocarbon oil, boiling below 350‹ C. and containing upwards of 40 per cent of paraffins and olefines, by partial combustion, the oil is preheated, vaporized, and mixed with air by flow down a metal mixing and reaction tube 13 which passes through the top to near the bottom of a vertical retort 11. As shown, the oil, pumped under pressure through a coil 23, is heated by burning gas, oil or tar and passed to a spray 18 near the top of the tube. The air, heated at 27 by the gas produced, enters the tube via a jacket 15 through channels between tangential vanes 17. Combustion takes place in the lower part of the tube assisted by heat transfer, due to fins 21, from the gas produced passing up the retort to the outlet 12. This gas passes from the heat exchanger 27 to a washer 28 and main 30 and, in a modification, may be used to preheat the oil. Steam may be supplied from a jacket 19 to extinguish combustion at the top of the tube. Specifications 10,305/13,. 167,736, 279,834, [all in Class 55 (ii)], and 420,713 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification oxygen may be used in place of air.
