Abstract
Alloys comprising silver, copper and/or nickel as the main constituent and comprising an oxide-forming constituent are heated in an oxygen-containing atmosphere to harden them. The oxide-forming constituent is one the heat of formation of whose oxide exceeds that of the main constituent by more than 45 kilogram calories per gram atom of oxygen and preferably by more than 85 kilogram calories per gram atom of oxygen, the quantity of this constituent being low enough to permit diffusion of oxygen in the alloy. The alloy is so heated as to produce absorption of oxygen and to give an increase in hardness of more than 30 per cent. The oxideforming constituent may be one or more of the elements aluminium, beryllium, magnesium, manganese and titanium. The treatment may be such as to produce on the alloy a layer of oxide of the main constituent, the alloy being then heated in a non-oxidizing or slightly oxidizing atmosphere to cause diffusion of the surface oxygen.
