Abstract
In making fertilizers comprising phosphate rock and a slag-forming material, e.g. slag containing lime, magnesia, alumina, silica &c., the phosphate rock is pre-heated to 1000 DEG C. and incorporated in the molten slag-forming material. In one embodiment, crushed phosphate rock is pre-heated by being charged into a rotary furnace immediately following the discharge of a previous molten charge, molten slag at 1350 DEG C. is then poured into the pre-heated phosphate and the mixture, e.g. of equal proportions of the ingredients, is heated to 1500 DEG C. The utilization of the heat of the combustion products for pre-heating the phosphate and the transference of the residual heat to recuperators for pre-heating the air required for combustion of the fuel for heating the furnace, may be effected by harnessing two rotary furnaces in tandem (see Group XII), and subjecting them to alternate reversal of firing; thus in continuous operation the phosphate rock is charged into one furnace unit while molten slag from a reduction furnace is charged into the other furnace unit containing pre-heated phosphate; the mixture in the second unit is heated to 1500 DEG C. during which time the combustion products therefrom are passed into the first unit to pre-heat the phosphate rock to 1000 DEG C. and after discharge of the mixture from the second unit, the first furnace unit is then charged with molten slag and the functions of the furnace units are reversed.ALSO:In making fertilizers comprising phosphate rock and a slag-forming material, e.g. slag containing lime, magnesia, alumina, silica &c. the phosphate rock is pre-heated to 1000 DEG C and incorporated in the molten slag-forming material.
