Abstract

[Class 111] [See also Groups XII and V] Refuse is supplied to a rotary drum furnace a in successive batches and burnt batch by batch with a supply of heated air until the furnace contains a sufficient charge of residues of combustion which are then fused by coal, oil or gas firing and tapped from the furnace in liquid form. The liquid slag may be run into moulds to form paving blocks or may be broken up after cooling to form rubble or may be granulated. Phosphates, lime and potassium salts may be added to the refuse before, during or after treatment in the furnace so as to render it suitable as a fertilizer. The refuse is charged into the furnace at d and tapped off at d<1>. The furnace gases pass through a duct o to a recuperator or regenerator k to heat air for combustion which is supplied through a pipe l to the burner i. When gas is employed it may also be preheated.
