[Classes 106 (ii) and 106 (iv)] A dial gauge for checking linear dimensions has the rack 32 mounted on a U-shaped reed 23 fixed to a block 20 on the gear-plate 18 by screws 26, whereby the base of the reed may be bent to adjust the clearance between the teeth 47 of the rack 32 and the teeth 48 of the pinion 28, to render this clearance greater than the total range of movement of the measuring plunger 12, thus preventing transmission of shocks to the gear train. The measuring plunger 12 is slidable in a depending portion 11 of the casing 10 and its upper end 15 contacts the end of a rod 30 carrying the rack 32 urged downwardly by a spring 35. The reed is secured at its central part by a screw 25 to a raised portion 22 of the block 20 to allow adjustment of the rack to the right on tightening the screws 26. Movement of the rack is transmitted by gearing 28, 41, 42, 43, 44 to a pointer 45, a back-lash spring 50 adjustable by a screw 52 causing the pinion 28 to follow the rack. The upward movement of the rack is limited by an adjustable stop-screw 37 enclosed by a cap 40. The dial 56 is pivoted on a hub 57 and adjusted by a screw 61 against the action of a spring 62 which passes under the hub and bears at 63 against the casing. The spring 62 can be reversed and the screw 61 engaged in a tapped hole provided in the opposite side of the casing.
