Abstract

653,983. Mowing-machines. PURSE, F. Aug. 19, 1948, No. 21871. [Class 6(iii)] On the cutter bar 1 of a mowing machine are mounted rotary cutting discs 3 which overlap to form a continuous cutting edge. The cutter bar comprises a lower box portion 1a with a detachable cover 1b. The cutting discs are fixed on spindles 2 mounted in ball bearings 8 fitted in the box portion and ball bearings 9 in a spindle guard 10 fixed to the box portion 1a at front and rear. Each spindle carries a sprocket wheel 4 engaged by a chain 7 driven by a sprocket wheel 5 on a spindle 6 coupled to a flexible driving shaft. One run of the chain 7 passes in a zig-zag manner over the sprocket wheels 4 and the return run passes in zig-zag manner over jockey wheels 13 so that adjacent discs 3 revolve in opposite directions and the chain does not sag, Fig. 3. The spindle guards 10 have a V-shaped forward projection and act as deflectors for the uncut crop.
