Abstract

In decomposing into sulphur dioxide waste sulphuric acid and mixtures thereof, containing little or no organic substances, the waste acid or mixture is introduced in the cold into the uppermost cool or moderately warm zone, e.g. to the drying zone, of a rotary furnace where it is mixed with pyrites or other sulphidic ores to be roasted. Burnt pyrites may be added to the sulphidic ore in amount up to 30 per cent calculated on the weight of the ore. In a modification, the sulphidic ore is mixed with the waste acid and with the burnt pyrites, if the latter be present, in a separate mixing apparatus.
