Abstract

Carbonaceous material is removed from sulphuric acid used for treatment of hydrocarbons by continuously countercurrently contacting the spent acid in an oxidising zone with air and nitric acid or any oxide of nitrogen other than N2O, the air being employed in sufficient quantity to provide free oxygen in the gaseous effluent, and passing the effluent comprising free oxygen, at least one oxide of nitrogen and water vapour to a cooling zone where nitric acid is formed, separating the nitric acid from the residual effluent and employing the nitric acid or nitrogen oxides obtained therefrom for the treatment of further spent acid, which has been concentrated to at least 70 per cent by weight, is passed into the top of a column maintained at 100-230 DEG C. The acid from the base of the column may be passed continuously through a second stripping column against a current of air for removal of dissolved nitric acid and nitrogen oxides and the resultant gas mixture is passed to the first column. The condensation of the nitric acid may be carried out in the presence of sulphuric acid, which may be obtained from the base of the stripping column, and the resulting mixed acid contacted with the spent acid or passed to the top of the stripping column.
