Abstract

Halogenated compounds of the general formula <FORM:0649358/IV (b)/1> (in which Hal is halogen, n is 1 or 2 and R is an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms) or their salts are prepared by heating until condensation is effected a halogenated hydroxybenzaldehyde with an alkyl carboxylic acid containing from 2 to 9 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or an alkali metal salt thereof. The condensation may take place in the presence of the anhydride corresponding to the acid used in the reaction and a catalyst such as potassium acetate or triethylamine. Examples are given of the preparation of a -methyl-3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxycinnamic acid and the corresponding a -ethyl-, a -n-butyl-, a -n-amyl- and a -n-octylcompounds; a -methyl-3,5-dichloro-4-hydroxycinnamic acid and the corresponding a -ethyl- and a -n-butylcompounds; a -methyl-3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxycinnamic acid and the corresponding a -ethyl- and a -n-butyl compounds; a -methyl-3-chloro-4-hydroxycinnamic acid and the corresponding a -ethyl- and a -n-butyl-compounds; a -methyl-3-bromo-4-hydroxy-cinnamic acid and the corresponding a -ethyl- and a -n-butyl-compounds; and a -n-hexyl - 3,5 - diiodo - 4 - hydroxycinnamic acid. The preparation of analogous compounds is referred to in which 3,5-diiodo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde is substituted for the 4-hydroxy isomer.
