Abstract

2,3,5,6-Tetrachlorobenzoic acid is prepared by the condensation of 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene with phosgene in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride at 155 DEG C. with subsequent hydrolysis of the reaction mixture with 1:1 hydrochloric acid.ALSO:A plant growth regulant comprises an inert carrier or diluent and a compound of the formula: <FORM:0785989/I/1> wherein R is substituted or unsubstituted formyl, hydroxymethyl, halogenated methyl, carboxyl or carboxylic ester, amide or salt group, and X is a halogen. Wetting agents such as alkyl aryl sulphonates and sulphonated aromatic hydrocarbons may be included in the liquid compositions and fillers such as diatomaceous earth, talc, chalk, fuller's earth and powdered ash in the solid mixtures. In an example an aqueous solution of 2, 3, 5, 6-tetrachlorobenzoic acid is described.ALSO:A herbicidal composition comprises a mixture of an inert carrier or diluent and a compound of the formula <FORM:0785989/VI/1> wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted formyl, hydroxy-methyl, halogenated methyl, carboxyl or carboxylic ester, amide or salt group, and X is a halogen. Wetting agents such as alkyl aryl sulphonates and sulphonated aromatic hydrocarbons may be included in the liquid compositions and fillers such as diatomaceous earth, talc, chalk, fuller's earth and powdered ash in the solid mixtures. In an example an aqueous solution of 2, 3, 5, 6-tetrachlorobenzoic acid is described.
