Abstract

648,314. Coal-cutting machines. RITCHIE, C. July 7, 1948, No. 17939/47. [Class 68 (i)] A coal-cutting machine comprises a base plate having mounted thereon a front panel supporting the driving sprockets 4 of one or more endless chains 3 which run in a plane parallel to that of the front panel within rectangular U-shaped channels 9 the flanges of which diverge in the vicinity of the sprockets. The picks are arranged to project from within the guides at right angles to the panel and are so arranged in groups that successive picks 5, 6 follow different paths during circulation of the chain and at least one of the picks projects in the direction of the area enclosed by the chain a distance, equal to half the distance between the upper and lower flights of the chain. The cut coal is gathered by a paddle conveyer incorporated with the base of the machine and it is discharged onto a face conveyer as the paddles are caused to swing upwards by a, ramp at the rear of the machine. The machine is held against the face either by pivoted fluid-operated jacks the rams of which engage abutments at the rear of the machine, or by a winch and hawser, whilst the front panel and base plate may be connected by a sloping panel beneath which runs the face conveyer.
