Abstract
647,398. Latches. POOLE, G. B. July 18,1949, No. 18863. [Class 44] In a gate or like latch comprising a pivoted bar 1, Fig. 1, which engages a notched keep 18, a locking element 26 is pivoted so as to swing in a vertical plane under gravity at right angles to the plane of movement of the latch bar into a position in which it blocks the bar 1. The locking element. which is shown applied to a " Suffolk " type latch, comprises a flat plate which is pivotally mounted by a rivet 25 at one end to a lug 24 integral with the keep 18, and is formed at its other end with a projecting nose 28, Fig. 2. The locking plate 26 is moved from its lower position in which it blocks the latch to an over-centre position free of the latch by means of a finger portion 29. The plate may be retained in the position shown dotted, Fig. 2, by the friction of the plate 26 against lug 24, which may be increased by an offset portion formed on the plate, or the rivet 25 may be replaced by a bolt and wing nut.
