Abstract

Sugar-containing liquid is purified by adding at room temperature about 1-1.25 per cent, based on the weight of total solids or sufficient to produce a pH of about 10, of a mixture of the oxides of Mg and Ca (preferably containing 50-70 per cent Mg0) removing the resulting precipitate and adjusting the pH of the liquid to neutral. The liquid is heated to and maintained for 3 minutes at 98 DEG C, and then decanted. Phosphoric acid or other solution capable of reducing the pH and producing precipitates is added in amount to lower the pH from about 5 to about 7.3, and thereafter the liquid is further heated to about 95 DEG C and decanted. The mixture may also contain 1-35 per cent of Mg(OH)2.
