Abstract

Aliphatic acid anhydrides are freed from sulphur and labile organo-sulphur compounds by treating with a hypochlorite. The anhydride may be stirred with the hypochlorite and left in contact therewith for some time, decanted, and distilled with sodium acetate. In examples, calcium hypochlorite (bleaching powder having 68 per cent available chlorine) is used. The mixture of anhydride and sodium acetate is heated to about 132 DEG C. cooled, and distilled under vacuum. Specification 100,450, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
