Abstract

643,096. Air-blast switches. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. Jan. 12, 1948, No. 874. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1947. [Class 38(v)] In an air-blast circuit-breaker having a nozzle or passage through which a stream of compressed air is passed to extinguish the arc formed when the contacts open, openings or channels connect the space immediately adjacent to the inlet side of the nozzle or passage to the free air to allow air ionized by the arc to escape. In Fig. 1 a moving contact 4 passes through a nozzle opening 6 in an insulating partition 5 to co-operate with a fixed contact 2: When the contacts are opened, the arc formed would, at the peak of the current cycle, tend to produce a back-pressure sufficient to reduce the flow of air through the nozzle and thus enable the arc to cause the air adjacent the inlet side of the nozzle to become ionized as indicated by the dots in Fig. 1. However, this ionized air can escape through passages 10, so that as the current falls, the arc is extinguished by a blast of air which is not ionized. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the partition 5 is of metal and the nozzle 6 serves as the stationary contact, whilst contact 2 is used as an auxiliary arcing contact. The invention may also be applied to a circuit-breaker in which the moving contact moves transversely across a blast passage, Fig. 3 (not shown). The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes and illustrates the provision of apertures extending through the partition 5, so as to interconnect the inlet and outlet sides of the nozzle. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
