Abstract

639,156. Band saws. BOYD, W. M. Sept. 29, 1947, No. 26237. [Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Croup XXIV] The cutting stretch of a band sawing machine extends between upper and lower support members, the members being adjustable in a lateral direction to enable the cutting stretch to be inclined to the vertical to give an inclined cut. The band passes over pulleys 15, 16, 19 and 20, the driving pulley 15 being fixed and pulleys 16, 19 and 20 carried on nuts 23 so that they are horizontally adjustable by screwed rods 21 turned by hand wheels 22. A jockey pulley 18 is adjustable to enable the band to be moved across the width of the other pulleys and so equalize the wear. Guides 25, 26 are carried by a rod 27 fitted in a socket 28 of a holder 29 mounted on the stub shaft carrying the pulley 19. Two lower sliding guides 31, 32 are provided to follow the adjustment of the band. The band may be removed from one of the adjustable pulleys, the slack being taken up by horizontal adjustment of the pulley 16, the rod 27 being removed to the socket 30 if the band is removed from top pulley 19. The pulley 15 is driven from the motor pulley 37 by V-belts 35, 36 and an intermediate pulley device mounted on a shaft 46 by which the speed may be changed. A horizontal work table 13, fitted in the working gap, has a removable central portion 14 with a number of slots 14a to enable the band to pass through in a number of positions. The table is tilted about an axis X by a double-handed screw and collar mechanism 50, 51, the angle of inclination being indicated by a dial 52. A work-feed comprises a cord 44 passing round two pulleys 43 which are mounted on a shaft 40. The shaft is rotated by an arm 41 carrying a cylindrical weight 42 actuating a ratchet and pawl mounted on the shaft. To facilitate manipulation of the work the table may have anti-friction supports in the form of balls which are so located in recesses in the table as to project slightly above the level of the table.
