WOODWORKIN G-MACHIN E.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
Application filed January 13, 1919. Serial No. 270,785.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEMUEL A. BAR- THOLOMEW, a citizen of the United States, residing in Tampa, Florida, and WADE H. BIRD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Tampa, Florida, have invented certain Improvements in Woodworking- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of woodworking machines which are generally used for the sectional shaping of timbers, such for instance, as those used in ship construction, one object of our invention being to render unnecessary the use of templets or battens for determining the shape or character of the out which is being made in the timber, another object being to insure the retention ofthe cutting tool in its various positions of angular adjustment, and a still further object being to provide simple and effective adjusting means for said cutting tool and for the guides whereby the timber is directed.
These objects we attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view, partly-in vertical section and partly in elevation, of a woodworking machine constructed in accordance with our invention;
Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 83, Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is an end view of a piece of timber showing the relation thereto of certain guides, one for the uncut portion of the I timber and the other for the out portion thereof, and
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view illus trating a modified construction of one of the adjusting devices of the machine.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, 1 represents the work-supporting table which is mounted upon a framework composed of vertical posts 2 and transverse braces 2 A cutter head 4 is removably mounted at the upper end of a cutter shaft 5 which is provided with a pulley for the reception of a driving belt. and which is adapted to turn in upper and lower bearings 6 on a bar 7 the latter being mounted by means of a horizontal pivot 7 upon a vertical standard 8 constitutin part of the fixed frame of the machine. The lower end of the bar 7 a segmental head 9 which fits snugly withconsequently of the cutter shaft and cutter head, is determined by a segmental scale 11 with which cooperates a pointer 12 mounted so as to swing with the bar 7, upon which is also mounted an arm 13, the latter having at its upper end a forwardly projecting finger 14 upon the forward end of which is removably mounted a guide plate 15 in line with the acting face of the cutter 4, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Projecting forwardly from the bar 7 is an arm 16 to whose outer end is pivoted a screw stem 17, the threaded portion of which is engaged by a nut 18 which is vertically confined to, but can turn in, a ring 19 mounted on horizontal pivots within a forked bearing 20 projecting from the frame of the machine, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The nut 18 is secured to or forms part of a hand-wheel 21 which has a handle 22 whereby it may be readily turned so as to raise or lower the scrdw stem 17 and thereby vary the angle of adjustment of the bar 7 and of the parts carried thereby.
If desired this construction can be reversed. as shown in Fig. 5, the nut 18 being pivotally mounted in the forked end of the arm 16, and the screw stem being rotated and vertically confined at its upper end.
Mounted upon tlfe table 1 in advance of the cutter head 4 is a vertical guide plate 23, which has a stem 24 free to slide in a guide 25 on the top of the table and having a down-turnedrear end which engages a threaded shaft 26 longitudinally confined by means of collars 27 to a supporting bearing 28 on the rear of the fixed frame, the forward end of said shaft turning in a bearing 29 on the front of the fixed frame of the machine. and being provided with a crank arm 30, whereby it may be readily turned by the operator so as to move the guide 23 back and forth across the table 1 in order to adjust, in respect to the cutter the employment of. a templet or batten for: this purpose.
The guideplate 15 is detachable from the arm 14 so that, When a cutter head which will produce a cut of different shape or size is in use, a corresponding shaped and sized plate may be employed. We claim:
1. The combination, in a machine of the character described, of a cutter head, its driving shaft, a carrier therefor, means for adjusting said carrier to different angular positions, and a guide plate adjustable with the cutter shaft and co-acting'with and conforming tothe cut face of the timber.
2. The combination, in a machine of the character described, of a cutter head, its driving shaft, a carrier therefor adjustable to different angular positions, means for effecting such angular adjustment, a guide in front of the cutter for the uncut face of the timber, and a guide in the rear of the cutter and adjustable therewith, said latter guideco-acting With: and conforming to the cut face of the timber.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification.
A. BARTHOLOMEW. WADE BIRD.
