Abstract

638,332. Operating brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. Jan. 17, 1948, No. 1500. [Class 103 (i)] A braking system for road vehicles comprises in combination an hydraulic master cylinder 13, a brake drum 15 mounted on the propeller shaft or other rotating member forming part of, or driven by the vehicle transmission, brake shoes co-operating with the drum and mounted on an angularly movable backplate having a radially projecting torque arm 19, shoe-spreading means coupled to one end of a balance lever 21 actuated by a brake pedal 23, linkage 25, 26 connecting the other end of the balance lever 21 to a rod 28 for operating the piston of the master cylinder 13, and bellcranks 29, 30 connected to the rod 28 and adapted to receive through said torque arm 19 the torque reaction of the back-plate of the transmission brake to apply an axial force to the rod 28 to augment,the pressure applied to the piston of the master cylinder by the pedal. By using two bell-cranks 29, 30 it is arranged that the augmenting force on the rod 28 shall be in the same direction whatever may be the direction of rotation of the shaft 16. A hand lever 31 connected by a lost motion member 32 may be used to actuate the transmission brake 18, stops 36, 37 limiting the movement of the arm 19 when it is used as a parking brake. Stops 33, 34 are provided to limit the movement of the balance lever 21, in the event of failure of either linkage connecting it to the rod 28.
