Abstract

642,991. Brake actuators. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and CHOUINGS, L. C. , May 7, 1948, No. 12650. [Class 103 (i)] In an internal shoe-drum brake of the type in which the adjacent ends of two shoes are forced apart by a two-lever mechanism comprising a first lever 33 which is mounted on a fixed pivot 32 at one end and acts at its other end on one of the shoes, and a second lever 34 which is pivoted at a point 35, intermediate its ends, to an intermediate point of the first lever 33, the second lever acting at one end on the other shoe, and being acted upon at its other end by operating means which cause it to turn about the connecting pivot 35 and exert oppositely directed forces which tend to spread the shoes apart, the operating means is such that it acts on the second lever 34 through a member having a rectilinear movement parallel to the plane of the brake. As shown, the operating means comprise a cable 26 which may be used to exert a pull towards the left on end 36 of lever 34 together with a fluid pressure operated split piston 19, 21 exerting a push. The adjacent ends of the two levers 33, 34 are disposed in housings on each side of the back plate 12.
