637,979. Caps with locks; tank closures. WILMOT-BREEDEN, Ltd., and SATCHWELL, F. J. June 17, 1948, No. 16293. [Classes 21 and 125(iii)] A closure cap for a motor vehicle fuel tank &c. comprises an outer cap, a spring loaded inner cap for closing the container neck, the caps being relatively axially slidable, means on the outer cap for engagement in recesses beneath a flange on the neck and a key operable device in the outer cap for locking the caps against relative axial movement. In the form shown, an outer cap a fits over the neck b of the tank and has a number of inwardly directed pins c which, when the cap is turned to close the tank, engage inclined surfaces f to draw the cap downwardly and snap into recesses d beneath a flange e surrounding the neck. To allow removal of the cap the flange is slotted for the passage of the pins. An inner cap g is axially slidable within cap a, its periphery being urged into sealing engagement with a washer i by a spring j interposed between the caps. The outer cap is formed with an inner central cylindrical portion n housing a key operable locking cylinder o which carries a transverse bar p at its lower end. The central portion of the inner cap is of cup form and is formed with a pair of shoulders q which are engaged by the bar p when this is turned, by a key inserted in the locking cylinder, to lie across them as in the position shown. With the bar in this position, the closure is locked against removal since the outer cap cannot be depressed to free the pins c from the recesses d. To unlock the closure the bar p is turned through 90 degrees by the key. The outer cap can then be depressed against spring j, since the bar can now enter the recess between the shoulders, thus freeing the pins c from engagement in recesses d. A cover piece r protects the end of the locking cylinder.
