Abstract

637,718. Universal joints. CULL, W., and SCOTT MOTORS (SALTAIRE), Ltd. May 16, 1946, No. 14802. [Class 80 (ii)] In a constant velocity joint wherein the torque is transmitted through a series of balls a engaged in a meridian race groove b<1> in a spherical inner member b on one shaft f, and in a groove c<1> in a hollow spherical outer member c secured to the other shaft, a cage d locating the balls being positioned between the members b, c, the arcs of the ball contact tracks in cross-section, Fig. 3, are centred at points on predetermined pressure lines e<2>, and have radii greater than the radius of the balls a. The root portions c<5> of the grooves are thus out of contact with the balls, and may be arcuate as shown or recessed. The, grooves b<1>, c<1> are eccentric with respect to the members b, c being concentric with points 11, 12 spaced equally on opposite sides of the joint centre O. Cage control means for maintaining the axis of the cage at equal angles with the shaft axes comprises a spherical sector collar h secured to the shaft f, on internally spherical shroud c<8>, the spherical surfaces having generating centres at 14 and 15 respectively and an annular control device j, k, m, located between the collar and the shroud and having corresponding spherical surfaces. The member m which may slide relatively to members j, k is kept in contact with the cage d by springs m<2> disposed between the flange ml and member k. A modification of the connection between the members j, k, m, comprises opposed ball race grooves j2, k2, having 45 degree flanks, in the members j, k, and a series of balls n in said grooves located in apertures m<3> in the member m. In another modification of the connection, a lever q, Fig. 8, ball shaped at the ends and centre is utilised. A further modification comprises a roller located in an aperture in the member m and having a tooth or a series of teeth on opposite sides thereof engaged in tooth recesses in the members j, k.
