[Class 87 (ii)] A press for the manufacture of hollow articles, e.g. footwear of rubber or other thermoplastic material, comprises a mould core and lateral and upper mould jaws which are movable towards and away from the mould core and is characterized in that the motions of the mould jaws toward or away from the mould core 15 are imparted to them by a moving mechanism having two pairs of press yokes which move with respect to the,mould core and are connected by beams. The mould side-parts 1, 2 and heating cheeks 3, 4 are coupled by arms 13 to the connecting beams 10 of pairs of yokes 9, 91 and move to close the mould as the yokes move towards each other. The yokes, guided on columns 11, are moved by driving screws 24, having left- and righthanded threads engaging collars 31 fixed in the connecting beams 10. The screws are rotated by a motor 25, worm drives 28 and other gearing being immersed in an oil bath in the base of the press. The upper part of the mould 32 with heating plate 34 is mounted so as to be vertically displaceable on the upper yoke 9 and moves down with this yoke to touch the sole of the shoe. Further (pressing) movement of the upper part 32 is caused by upward movement of the lower yoke 91 which acts, through springs 41 and rods 43 on the outer ends of levers 37. These bear, at their shorter ends against the heating plate 34. The mould is adjustable by means of rotatable eccentric sleeves 17 on which the arms 13 are mounted. These may be separately adjustable, or geared together for simultaneous adjustment. One of the arms 13 is divided into two parts 18, 19, one of these parts 19 carrying rigidly bolts 20 which have shoulders bearing against rings 21 fixed in the other part 19. These rings are sheared through by the bolts when the maximum admissible pressure of the press is exceeded. Modifications are referred to in which (a) the closing of the press is effected by separation of the yokes, (b) the yokes are moved by rack and pinion, (c) horizontally or obliquely moving yokes are used, and (d) the yokes are stationary and the press parts moved instead.
