Abstract
594,128. Stretch bending. CAIRNS CORPORATION. Aug. 16, 1944, No. 15668. Convention date, July 9, 1943. [Class 83 (iv)] Apparatus for shaping a metal sheet comprises a form 10 having the desired contour over which the said sheet is shaped and jaws J, for gripping the four sides of the sheet S, which can be moved relative to the form, e.g. to tension the sheet before shaping and allow controlled movement when the form is moved against the sheet by its plunger 12. The jaws may be closed to grip the sheet by bolts 47, Fig. 4, or by hydraulic plungers 29a, Fig. 3, toggles 30 and lever 27. The jaw supports 35, Fig. 2, are pivoted at 36 to the frame and can be moved by hydraulic plungers 38. In a modification, the jaw supports 40, Fig. 4, for the sides of the sheet S can be moved vertically by plungers 41 and in another modification the cylinders of these plungers can be moved horizontally by other plungers. Instead of the hydraulic control, other forms of actuating mechanism may be used.
