Abstract
633,984. Grinding valve seats. TARTAN MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., and McCARTNEY, R. H. Dec. 2, 1947, No. 31827. [Class 60] A valve seat grinder comprises a rotatable sleeve 1, Fig. 1, having at its upper end a socket 2 in which an insert 3, with a polygonal bore to receive the key of a hand or power-driven tool for rotating the sleeve, is held by setscrews or rivets 4, the insert seating on a plate 5; to reduce weight the sleeve is grooved at 6, thus providing cooling fins 7. The lower end of the sleeve 1 has a flange 12 against which abuts a flange 13 on the upper end of a nosepiece 14 exteriorly threaded at 15 to receive the grinding stone 16; the nose-piece 14 and sleeve 1 are secured together by a ring 17 of ductile metal, the upper and lower edges of which are open inwardly. The sleeve 1 rotates on a bush 18 which is mounted on a pilot 8 extending through the valve seat and fitting closely in the valve guide 10; rotation of the bush 18 on the pilot 8 is prevented by a split ring 19 frictionally gripping the pilot, resting on the internal shoulder between the sleeve and nose-piece, and having a lug 20 engaging a recess 21 in the bush. A clearance between the plate 5 and the upper end of the bush 18 permits descent of the sleeve 1 as grinding proceeds. In a modification, Fig. 5, the sleeve 1 has a downward extension 14a inwardly flanged at 22 to form a seating for the split ring 19.
