[Class 60] [Also in Group XXVI] The cylinder bore of an internal-combustion engine or other reciprocating engine is ground cylindrical while the two ends of the cylinder are maintained at the same difference of temperature as exists when the cylinder is under working conditions of temperature. When the cylinder is cold, the bore will therefore taper towards the explosion end. Alternatively, the cylinder bore is ground cylindrical while the two ends of the cylinder are maintained at a difference of temperature greater than that existing when the cylinder is under working conditions of temperature whereby when the cylinder is under working conditions of temperature, and before wear has taken place, the cylinder bore at the explosion end will be smaller than that at the crank-shaft end. The temperature difference between the two ends during grinding is caused by heating the explosion end of the cylinder, as e.g. by induction heating or by a heated metal ring ; alternatively, the crank-shaft end of the cylinder may be cooled.
