Abstract

555,639. Bearings. ASPIN, F. M., and ELLING- HOUSE, F. Jan. 14, 1942, Nos. 555/42 and 2502/43. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXVI] A liner for a bearing, cylinder or other housing is secured therein by forming the engaging faces slightly tapered relatively in both directions axially to provide an interference fit having pressure gradients when assembled. The liner metal may have a different co-efficient of expansion from the housing metal and these metals are selected as regards expansion, strength, &c. and the degree of interference is selected so that the pressures in use do not cause fracture or crushing. The finish of the engaging faces may be different, e.g. one rough ground and the other finished with slight undulations. If both have undulations these may be arranged to cross. For a magnesium alloy cylinder a, Fig. 2, and cast iron liner the interference may be 0.001 inch per inch diameter at the middle and 0.002 inch at the ends of the cylinder. The liner may have a cylindrical waist or have the tapers reversed or both. The liner is cooled and the housing heated so that they can be assembled. The liner may be of bi-metal construction of which one metal may be the same as the housing. An intermediate bonding metal may be applied as a thin layer to liner or housing.
