631,607. Hydraulic couplings. BECKER, J. E. Feb. 10, 1947, No. 3903. Convention date, Feb. 14, 1946. [Class 69 (ii)] In a hydraulic coupling comprising radial blades mounted in an impeller wheel, a torquereducing barrier-member is formed around the inner periphery of the wheel in front of the edges of the blades and orifices are provided in the barrier member which register with the spaces between the impeller blades and openended, liquid conduits positioned between the impeller blades, into which the orifices in the barrier member open. The barrier member, which limits the torque when the runner 12 is loaded and either runs at a slow speed or stops altogether, comprises ring plates 18 with orifices 19 which plates are secured in front of the inner portion of impeller blades 14 and register with the liquid-circulation spaces between the blades. Tapered channel-members 20, which are also positioned in the blade spaces and abut the ring plates 18, have restricted openings 21 so that with the runner 12 stationary, or nearly so, the effective diameter of the liquid flow in the coupling is increased causing the liquid to pass into the orifices 19 and discharge from the opening 21 so preventing free circulation of the liquid and hence the transmission of full torque.
