[Class 146 (iii)] A writing appliance comprises a casing 1 with a writing instrument at each end, one at least of which is a reservoir pen 2 displaceable axially of the casing for projection to a writing position, the other instrument 3 constituting or forming part of push-button means for projecting the pen. As shown, both instruments are ball-point pens, and the instrument 3 also has writing and non-writing positions. The unit 2, Fig. 2, is normally held retracted by a spring 14 and its inner end abuts against the head of a bolt 18 screwed into the end of a member 17 slidable in the casing 1. A ferrule 26 screwed into the casing limits the inward movement of the unit 2, and the bolt 18 permits of adjustment of the overall length of the assembly. A catch 21 attached to a spring 20 carried by the member 17 snaps into a hole 22 in the casing to hold the pen in projected position and can be released by a knob 24 on the pocket clip 23. The pen 3 is inserted in the member 17 and is held frictionally by a constriction 27. It is provided with a butt 16 forming the push-button, and with ribs 29 which expand the constriction 27 as the pen is inserted. The pen 3 is reversed when to be used. Differently coloured inks may be employed in the two pens. In a modified construction, Fig. 10, the pen 3 is attached directly to the pen 2 and is threaded externally to engage an internally-screwed sleeve 30 capable of free axial and rotary movement in a fixed ferrule 32 in the casing. The outer end of the sleeve 30 is enlarged to form the pushbutton for the pen 2 and is rotated to expose the point of the pen 3. In the latter event, the enlarged part may prevent projection of the pen 2 by engagement with the end of the ferrule 32, but the dimensions may be arranged so that both pens can be projected at the same time.
