Class 146(3) A ball-point pen of the kind in which a writing element is retractable into the barrel of the pen is characterized in that the rear end of the writing element is secured to an end. cap which is engaged with the barrel for axial and rotary movement relative thereto, the end cap being accessible without removal of any other part of the pen and being operable manually to effect such relative movement and thereby to project or retract the writing element from or into the barrel. As shown, the front part 1. Fig. 1, of the barrel has a groove 2 which co-operates with a projection 4 on the rear part 3 to project a ball point refill 7 into writing position. The refill 7 is urged into a recess 6 in the base 5 of the part 3 by a return spring 9. In a modification, Fig. 4, not shown, the refill is fitted tightly into the base thus dispensing with the return spring. In another embodiment, the front part 20, Fig. 8, of the barrel has a groove 19 engaged by a projection 4 on the rear part 3, such that the refill is projected by first turning the part 3 and then pushing it relatively to the part 20.
