[Class 138 (ii)] A steam electric iron comprises a movably mounted shield which extends over and seals the filling aperture when fastened, in such a way as to permit escape of steam, under excess pressure, laterally of the shield, i.e. so as not to scald the operator's hand. The handle is preferably carried by the movable shield and is spaced therefrom, for heat insulating purposes, by spaced parallel metal plates. A closure member for the filling aperture is preferably resiliently mounted on the underface of the shield. As shown, the water reservoir B has a depression 25 with a filling aperture 26 and a dome 21 with a steam outlet pipe 19 whose lower end is secured by a nut 20, steam outlet holes 24 are provided and access to the nut 20 is obtained by removing cover-plate 23. To the rear of the water reservoir is secured a hinge 34 one arm 36 of which acts as a terminal block and the other arm 33 carries the shield S and the rear leg of the handle H, with the intervention of spaced cooling fins. To the under-side of the cover-plate is secured a U-shaped spring 291 carrying a closure element 27 provided with a sealing gasket. The front end of the coverplate is formed with a raised portion 31 to clear the dome 21 and has a latch. The latch comprises a fixed post 40 secured to the dome 21, the top of the post having a pair of diametrically disposed projections; the projections can pass through a similarly-shaped slot in the plate 43, which is rotatably mounted on the handle by means of a screw 48 and can be rotated through 90 degrees by thumb-piece 50 to prevent withdrawal of the post 40 therefrom. Rotation of the plate 63 is limited to 90 degrees by a fixed pin 51 which enters an arcuate slot in the rotatable latch assembly, such slot extending through 90 degrees only. The latch assembly is also rotatably secured to the top of the cover-plate S by hooks 47 which are secured to the latch assembly and are turned under the rim of a circular aperture in the top of the raised portion 31 of the cover-plate. The latch shown comprises cooling fins to minimise transfer of heat to the handle, but a modified latch comprising a hook is also described. The closure element may be replaced by a hemispherical element of gasket material mounted under the cover-plate by a small compression spring.
