Abstract

598,978. Electric hand-irons. SCHREYER, E. P. June 19. 1945, No. 15512. [Class 138 (ii)] In an electric hand-iron of the kind comprising a sole plate heated by an electric element, a shell mounted on the sole plate and a handle mounted on the shell, the sole plate has two ironing surfaces and means are provided in association with cut-away parts of the shell to enable the iron to rest on either side with the sole plate elevated above the support. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, a hand-iron is provided in addition to the main pressing surface 21 of the sole plate with a rear auxiliary pressing surface 24, also pointed but shorter, merging in curves 23 with the main portion and inclined at an angle thereto. The heating elements 26 and 26<1> are preferably continuous, there being between the two a relatively cool point to allow stretching of the work before setting by the high heat and thus prevent shrinkage. The thermostat with its adjustable contact 33 and thermostatically movable contact 32 is in a housing 38, Fig. 4 and 5, secured to the sole plate and projecting through a layer of asbestos 35, Fig. 14, a metal cover 36 and a metal shell 37. The setting knob shaft 39 projects through the top of the housing, the rear end of which is closed by a vertical plate 41 carrying terminals 42: An outer shell 43 having the handle 67 secured to it is connected by bolts 44 to the sole plate and is curved down forwardly and rearwardly to the pointed ends at 47 and 50, the sides being cut away to form openings through which project cooling fins 54, 55, 56, 57 spaced by stamped up projections 58, 59, 60, 61, and supported on lugs 40 bent out from the thermostat housing 38. The lowest fin 54 projects laterally beyond the sole plate and is of heavier gauge metal so that it may be used, by tilting the iron sideways as a support to rest the iron at a safe distance above the ironing table without scorching. In a modified form an identical sole plate 20<1>, Fig. 13, has a casing 43<1> with lower side openings, the metal from which is bent out on the upper edge to form projecting fins 94 to act as side rests and these fins may have an elongated opening.
