Abstract
591,136. Steaming irons. SCHREYER, E. P. Jan. 5, 1944, No. 190. [Class 138 (ii)] An iron of the type having a water container above a baseplate and a cover 10 for the top opening of the container, the latter containing metal wool and having a steam space in its upper forward portion above the water level, includes a rib or plurality of ribs 37 extending transversely of the cover and projecting towards the metal wool the rib being positioned to protect the steam space from the surging water. In the construction of Fig. 1, the water container 8 is filled with aluminium wool and is divided by a baffle 34 into a water reservoir and a forward steam space. Transverse ribs, 37 of the cover 10 and the aluminium wool co-operate with the baffle 34 in preventing water splashing over into the steam space. The maximum level of the water in the ironing position is below the top of baffle 34 and is determined by the height of the filled hole 32. The electric heating element 39 is covered by an asbestos pressure plate 41 which co-operates with projections and recesses 44 in the base of the water container 8. Steam escapes through a pipe 28 and holes 31 in the sole plate 25. A thermostat 47 comprising contacts 48, 49 and a bimetallic strip 50, cuts off the supply should the water container boil dry. In a modification Fig. 5, metal pressure plates, 5 bolted to the sole plate, secure the heating element 39 leaving an air space 56' between the base of the water container 8' and the pressure plates 55. The thermostat is manually adjustable by a knob 72 to maintain the sole plate at a given temperature. The iron may be used for dry pressing of articles when the water container is empty. In both constructions a rest is formed by a rearward projection 76 of the handle 13 and when standing on end the iron may be used for steaming other articles such as hats.
