Abstract

627,624. Shot-gun cartridges. ROY, A. Jan. 29, 1947, No. 2816. Convention date, June 20, 1946. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 6, 1947.] [Class 9 (i)] A metal cartridge case 1 for a sporting gun, formed by successive stamping, drawing or moulding operations, with external longitudinal channels 4 has internal and overall external diameters equal to those of a conventional cardboard case for use with a gun of the same bore. The case has a portion 3 of reduced thickness for crimping over the charge and an end wall within which is placed a metal cup 2 held in place by a flanged collar 5, the base of the cup forming an anvil 6. This base also accommodates a case containing a detonator 7, the casing 1 being recessed to protect the detonator from accidental blows. Serrations 8 in the casing prevent gases passing between the casing and the cup 2 when the cartridge is fired. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also metal cartridge cases 1 formed without longitudinal channels, in which the cartridge base may be dished as at 4, Fig. 1 (Cancelled), and provided with vent-holes 5 leading from a recess holding a compressed impact-sensitive priming composition 6 to a charge of gunpowder in the body of the case 1. The vent-holes may be in the sides of the recess. In one construction (not shown) the case has a heat-insulating liner of cardboard. The case may be knurled or provided with bosses, it may also be provided near the base with external serrations forming baffles for the gases in the gun chamber. A fulminating composition may replace the priming unit, the composition being held in position between discs, one of which obturates the vent-holes in the primer recess. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
