Abstract

626,244. Electrodeposition of copper. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. April 18, 1947, No. 10365. Convention date, April 17, 1946. [Class 41] A process for the electrodeposition of copper on articles includes a smoothing process wherein an initial copper deposit is made alternately cathodic and anodic for substantially equal periods of time from 1 to 5 seconds duration in an electrolyte containing copper cyanide. Preferably the initial deposition of copper takes place immediately before the smoothing process and the two processes takes place in the same electrolyte. As an example, a steel article is electroplated with copper in a bath containing copper cyanide, sodium cyanide, sodium hydroxide, and sodium sulphocyanide. The bath may also contain a brightener and anti-pitting agent consisting of a mixed aqueous solution of C-cetyl betaine and benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride. The article is then made an electrode in a copper cyanide solution, which may be the same solution in which it was electroplated. The article is in circuit with a source of direct current and relays connected to a timing device so that the current is reversed every three seconds until the desired smoothing effect is obtained. Subsequent electroplating may be carried out which will produce a relatively thick, smooth copper deposit. In another example the article after being subjected to the electrolytic smoothing process is plated in a nickel bath containing nickel sulphate, nickel chloride, and boric acid. Specification 528,762 is referred to.
