Abstract

618,520. Screw pumps. SELF-PRIMING PUMP & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., TULL, W. C., and McKEAN, J. A. May 3, 1946, No. 13529. [Class 110 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] The casing of an aircraft fuel pump is sealed into an aperture in the fuel tank and its driving motor is supported by a quick-release connection outside the tank. As shown, the motor 2 is secured to a flange 20 on the pump body 1 by the axial pressure of a spring 19 on bayonet connections 17, 18, a flexible coupling 21 having radially sprung keys 22 simultaneously connecting the drive to the pump spindle 7. The connection can be additionally secured by spring-pressed plungers (not shown). The impeller 10, which. may comprise one or two stages, is enclosed in a filter 13 within the fuel tank sump 6, a gland 11 and thrower ring 12 preventing leakage of fuel along the spindle. A cone 16 surrounds the inlet to the impeller and serves to separate air and vapour from the liquid pumped, whilst a byepass valve 15 permits fuel to be drawn from the tank when the pump is not working.
